Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American artist and rapper, best than her stage name, Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's performance in the fields of music, film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations and an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah, who was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. The stage name Latifah meaning delicate and very compassionate in Arabic was bestowed to her her aunt when she was eight. Latifah, who was 5'10" tall forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. In her high school's play, Latifah performed "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's first group, which included several MCs as well as producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded a demo of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was given to the host of Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. The singer released her debut single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
